American Legion member Gary Wilkins will be receiving his handicapped vehicle on Wednesday at 1PM. For those of you who don’t know the story, Gary was injured in a motorcycle accident about 4 years ago which left him in a coma for months and almost took his life. He survived but he developed an infection in his leg that required an amputation. Gary is a member who has been with us since the beginning. Over the last 2 years we have fought the VA to get a handicapped van paid for but we lost that battle. We did a GoFUNDME and raised $2,300 to assist Gary in his efforts. He purchased a vehicle and he got the VA to cover the majority of the required changes to the vehicle that will allow him to drive it. The post wrote a check last week for $2,000 which covered the remaining portion the VA didn’t cover. We will be providing Gary a check for the remaining $300 which will help cover some of the expenses like insurance and gas for the vehicle.
If you would like to be there when the vehicle arrives you can meet at his home around 12:45 PM His address is 185 Griffin Ave Fate Tx 75189. This will be a special moment for Gary and I encourage everyone to come by and show your support. This man has been home bound for years and now he will have the ability to travel and do some of the most basic things that we take for granted.
